Clown Dog with Chilli

Sue Ellen might have hated making clown dogs version, but with a little finesse a hot dog with chilli sounds A-OK to us!

Method

Chilli

  • In an iron skillet, heat some oil

  • Sauté most of the onions and garlic until softened, then add the minced beef

  • Once the beef has been browned, add the chopped tomatoes and chilli powder, and season

Hot dogs

  • Clean the skillet ready to fry the hot dogs

  • Fry a little oil in the pan

  • Drain the frankfurters and add to the pan, turning frequently for around 5 minutes

Buns

  • Preheat the grill to medium hot

  • Cut down the middle of each bun (if not pre-cut) and add the hot dog

  • Spoon on the chilli

  • Add a sprinkling of cheese and the remaining onions

  • Place the dogs under the grill for 2-3 mins until the cheese is melted and the buns have slightly browned

  • Serve with American mustard, ketchup, or whatever your favourite sauces are.

Ingredients

Makes approx. 6

  • 500g beef mince (whatever fat content you prefer)

  • 1 large onion finely chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic finely chopped

  • 400g chopped tomatoes

  • Chilli powder to taste (approx. 1 tsp)

  • Salt

  • Pepper

  • Frankfurters (i.e. Trueman’s American Style hot dogs in a jar)

  • Buns - we recommend using brioche buns or seeded vienna buns

  • Sparkenhoe Red Leicester cheese (approx. 70g)

  • American mustard

  • Ketchup
